8d6fdf22d3 fix(backends): derive the protoc generator from the protobuf runtime, regenerate stubs after late installs (#11057)
* fix(backends): choose the protoc generator from the protobuf runtime, and regenerate stubs after late installs

The vLLM backends still crash on startup with

  VersionError: Detected incompatible Protobuf Gencode/Runtime versions when
  loading backend.proto: gencode 7.35.0 runtime 6.33.6

despite #10735 and #10944. Three separate defects kept it alive.

1. runProtogen picked the generator from the installed *grpcio* version.
   grpcio-tools' version tracks grpcio, but the gencode its bundled protoc
   emits tracks *protobuf*, and the two move independently: grpcio-tools
   1.82.1 (the version #10735 pins to, matching grpcio 1.82.1) requires
   protobuf>=7.35.1 and stamps gencode 7.35.0. Pinning to grpcio could
   therefore never constrain the gencode. Constrain the install to the
   protobuf already in the venv instead and let the resolver pick the newest
   compatible grpcio-tools. That both selects a generator the runtime accepts
   and stops protogen from moving the runtime under the backend's other deps.
   This is self-correcting, so the hardcoded GRPCIO_TOOLS_VERSION=1.78.0
   escape hatch from #10944 is no longer needed and is removed.

2. The stubs were generated too early. Most branches of vllm/install.sh (and
   vllm-omni) install vllm *after* installRequirements, and vllm re-resolves
   the protobuf runtime as it lands. Stubs generated against the pre-vllm
   runtime can end up newer than the runtime that finally ships, which is the
   ROCm failure exactly. Regenerate once the dependency set is final.

3. rm -f of the .py sources left __pycache__ behind. CPython validates a .pyc
   against source mtime and size, both of which can be unchanged across a
   regeneration (the gencode triple is the same width whether it reads 7.35.0
   or 6.33.5), so a stale backend_pb2.pyc could shadow the stub just written.

Also fail the build when the generated stub cannot be imported, so a
gencode/runtime mismatch surfaces at image build time instead of reaching
users as an opaque "grpc service not ready".

Verified by driving the real runProtogen through the ROCm install sequence in
a venv harness: before, gencode 7.35.0 against runtime 6.33.6 (reproducing the
reported error verbatim); after, gencode 6.33.5 against runtime 6.33.6 and the
stub imports cleanly.

* fix(backends): regenerate protobuf stubs in the other backends that install after installRequirements

Same defect as the vllm change: installRequirements generates the stubs at the
end of its own run, so any backend that installs further packages afterwards can
have the protobuf runtime moved out from under stubs that were already written.
The gencode stamped into backend_pb2.py then exceeds the runtime that ships and
the backend dies at model load with "grpc service not ready".

fish-speech already had this bug and worked around the symptom: it forces
protobuf>=5.29.0 after installRequirements precisely because "transitive deps
(wandb, tensorboard) may downgrade protobuf to 3.x but our generated
backend_pb2.py requires protobuf 5+". Regenerating after the pin addresses the
cause rather than propping up the runtime to match stale stubs.

Applied to the backends whose post-installRequirements step resolves a
dependency graph and can therefore move protobuf:

  fish-speech -e . plus an explicit protobuf install
  vibevoice pip install . (with deps)
  llama-cpp-quantization  gguf / GGUF_PIP_SPEC
  trl                     gguf / GGUF_PIP_SPEC

Deliberately not applied to ace-step and chatterbox (both --no-deps, so the
dependency graph cannot change) or voxcpm (pins setuptools only). gguf does not
depend on protobuf today, but it resolves dependencies, and "this package does
not touch protobuf right now" is exactly the assumption that made the earlier
fix ineffective.

* fix(backends): resolve the protoc generator in a throwaway env so it cannot edit the backend's pinned deps

Installing grpcio-tools into the backend's own venv to generate the stubs also
drags its dependencies in: grpcio-tools 1.82.1 requires grpcio>=1.82.1, so a
backend that pinned grpcio==1.78.1 silently shipped 1.82.1 instead. Caught by
building the llama-cpp-quantization image and reading the versions back out of
the artifact:

  before   grpcio 1.82.1   (requirements.txt pins grpcio==1.78.1)
  after grpcio 1.78.1 grpcio-tools absent from the venv entirely

Resolve the generator in a throwaway environment instead, still constrained to
the protobuf the backend ships so the gencode stays compatible. The backend's
dependency set is then exactly what its requirements files declared. protoc's
output is plain Python and carries no dependency on the interpreter that
produced it, so generating from a different env is safe; the import check still
runs under the backend's python, since that is the interpreter that has to load
the stubs at model load.

Verified on the rebuilt image: gencode 7.35.0, runtime protobuf 7.35.1, grpcio
back at its pinned 1.78.1, and the shipped stub imports cleanly against 7.35.1.

* fix(backends): bound the protoc generator by BOTH the installed grpcio and protobuf

The generated stubs impose two independent constraints, and every fix so far,
including the previous commit on this branch, satisfied one while violating the
other:

  backend_pb2.py needs protobuf runtime >= gencode
  backend_pb2_grpc.py  needs  installed grpcio >= grpcio-tools

Resolving the generator against protobuf alone picked grpcio-tools 1.82.1 for a
backend holding grpcio at 1.78.1, so the gencode was fine but the gRPC stub was
not:

  RuntimeError: The grpc package installed is at version 1.78.1, but the
  generated code in backend_pb2_grpc.py depends on grpcio>=1.82.1.

That is also why installing grpcio-tools into the backend venv appeared to work
earlier: it dragged grpcio up to match, which was load-bearing rather than the
regression it looked like. Isolating the generator removed the accidental fix
and exposed the missing constraint.

Bound grpcio-tools from both sides instead and let the resolver find the newest
version satisfying both. The protobuf ceiling makes it back off to an older
generator when the runtime trails, bounding the gencode; the grpcio ceiling
keeps the _grpc stub loadable. Resolved against the four real runtime pairs
observed in built images:

  grpcio 1.78.1 / protobuf 7.35.1  -> grpcio-tools 1.78.0, gencode 6.31.1  OK
  grpcio 1.78.0 / protobuf 6.33.6  -> grpcio-tools 1.78.0, gencode 6.31.1  OK
  grpcio 1.82.1 / protobuf 6.33.6  -> grpcio-tools 1.81.1, gencode 6.33.5  OK
  grpcio 1.82.1 / protobuf 7.35.1  -> grpcio-tools 1.82.1, gencode 7.35.0  OK

Also restore the import check to cover backend_pb2_grpc as well as backend_pb2.
Narrowing it to backend_pb2 is why the image build passed while CI failed: the
guard could not see the constraint that was actually broken.

Verified by running the CI sequence locally for llama-cpp-quantization, the
backend whose test failed:
  make -C backend/python/llama-cpp-quantization        -> exit 0
  make -C backend/python/llama-cpp-quantization test   -> exit 0, OK

8565febe45 fix(vllm): pin L4T arm64 backend to vllm==0.24.0 for GB10 stability (#10725)
The nvidia-l4t-cuda-13-arm64 vLLM backend left `vllm` unpinned, so the
prebuilt image drifted onto whatever aarch64 wheel was latest at build
time (0.23.x). On GB10 / DGX Spark (Grace Blackwell, unified memory),
0.23 crashes deterministically during cold model loads with an empty
"Engine core initialization failed" set and pins GPU memory until a host
reboot.

vLLM 0.24.0 carries vllm-project/vllm#45179 ("release cached device
memory under pressure on UMA GPUs during weight loading"), which the
reporter verified fixes the crash on GB10. Pin the L4T requirements to
0.24.0 to match the already-pinned cublas13 build
(requirements-cublas13-after.txt) and keep the image deterministic.

Editing this file also re-triggers the single-arch L4T image build via
the path filter, republishing the gallery image with 0.24.0 (the
single-arch matrix builds again after #10703).

ef15b4bfda fix(vllm): install ROCm vLLM from the AMD wheel index on Python 3.12 (#10651)
* fix(vllm): install ROCm vLLM from the AMD wheel index on Python 3.12

The rocm-vllm backend crashed at load with "No module named 'vllm'".
requirements-hipblas-after.txt requested a bare `vllm`, which resolves to
the CUDA-only PyPI wheel; that wheel is unusable on an AMD GPU. vLLM's
prebuilt ROCm wheels live on a dedicated index (https://wheels.vllm.ai/rocm/)
and are published only for CPython 3.12, so on the backend's default 3.10
the installer silently falls back to the CUDA wheel.

Add a hipblas branch to backend/python/vllm/install.sh that pins Python to
3.12 and installs vllm from the ROCm wheel index, hiding the bare-`vllm`
after-file so installRequirements installs only the base ROCm
torch/transformers first and does not pull the CUDA wheel.

Fixes #10642

* chore(vllm): drop the dead hipblas-after requirement and its hide dance

requirements-hipblas-after.txt (a bare `vllm`) is never installed for
hipblas: installRequirements only adds requirements-${BUILD_PROFILE}-after.txt
when BUILD_TYPE != BUILD_PROFILE, and for hipblas they are equal. So the file
was dead and the install.sh hide/restore of it was a no-op. Remove both. The
hipblas branch already installs vllm explicitly from the ROCm wheel index, so
deleting the bare-`vllm` file also removes a latent CUDA-wheel trap should the
installRequirements gap ever be closed.

7910018249 fix(vllm): non-streaming tool-call regression after #10351 (#10638)
fix(vllm): non-streaming tool-call regression after #10351 (native_streaming is a capability flag, not a state flag)

#10351 introduced native streaming via `parser.extract_tool_calls_streaming`
and gated the post-loop `extract_tool_calls` block on `native_streaming and
not native_streaming_error`. That works for streaming requests, but for
non-streaming requests the same flag is still True (it only means "the
parser can stream", not "we actually streamed"), so the block was skipped
and the `elif` cleared `content = ""` — the tool call was silently lost.

Symptom: non-streaming chat.completions with `tools=[...]` returns
`finish_reason: "stop"` with `content: ""` and no `tool_calls`. Streaming
requests are unaffected.

Fix: gate both branches on `streaming` too, so the extract_tool_calls
block runs for non-streaming requests (and for streaming requests that
fell back to the buffered path).

Reproduction (vLLM 0.24, Qwen3-Coder-Next-NVFP4, qwen3_coder parser):

    curl -s -X POST http://localhost:8080/v1/chat/completions \
      -H 'Content-Type: application/json' \
      -d '{"model":"coder","stream":false,
           "messages":[{"role":"user","content":"7*8 via calc"}],
           "tools":[{"type":"function","function":{"name":"calc",
             "parameters":{"type":"object",
               "properties":{"expression":{"type":"string"}}}}}]}'

Before: finish_reason: "stop", content: "", tool_calls: []
After:  finish_reason: "tool_calls", tool_calls[0].function.name: "calc"

Streaming path re-verified in the same setup: delta.tool_calls arrives
token-by-token, finish_reason: "tool_calls", no raw XML in content.

3a87d9e48f feat(vllm): macOS/Metal support via vllm-metal (MLX) (#10489)
* feat(vllm): macOS/Metal support via vllm-metal (MLX)

Add an additive Apple-Silicon path to the existing vllm Python backend so
vLLM runs on macOS via vllm-metal (github.com/vllm-project/vllm-metal).

Spike outcome (proven on a real M4 / macOS 26.5, Qwen3-0.6B):
- vllm-metal registers through vLLM's platform-plugin entry point
  (metal -> vllm_metal:register); MetalPlatform activates and runs on the
  GPU through MLX.
- LocalAI's backend.py is UNCHANGED: AsyncEngineArgs(...) ->
  AsyncLLMEngine.from_engine_args transparently resolves to vLLM 0.23's v1
  AsyncLLM MLX engine, and async generate produced correct output.
- backend.py is NOT touched: its only empty_cache() call is CUDA-only
  (guarded by torch.cuda.is_available()), so the benign shutdown-only
  "Allocator for mps is not a DeviceAllocator" noise comes from vLLM's
  internal EngineCore teardown, not from our code.

Changes (all gated behind a darwin condition; Linux/CUDA/ROCm/Intel paths
are byte-for-byte unchanged):
- install.sh: darwin branch forces PYTHON_VERSION=3.12 (vllm-metal
  requirement), creates/activates LocalAI's managed venv via ensureVenv,
  then reproduces vllm-metal's installer INTO that venv (build vLLM 0.23.0
  from the release source tarball against requirements/cpu.txt, then install
  the prebuilt vllm-metal wheel from its latest GitHub release), and runs
  runProtogen. installRequirements is skipped on darwin.
- backend-matrix.yml: add a vllm includeDarwin entry (mps, python).
- index.yaml: add metal capability + concrete metal-vllm /
  metal-vllm-development child entries mirroring the metal-kitten-tts
  template.

Version coupling: vllm-metal pins vLLM 0.23.0, equal to LocalAI's current
vllm pin. Bumping vllm must be coordinated with a supporting vllm-metal
release; documented in install.sh and requirements-cublas13-after.txt.

* chore(vllm): track the darwin vllm-metal pin via the autobumper

The Apple Silicon build pinned vLLM 0.23.0 as a hidden string in install.sh
while floating the vllm-metal wheel on releases/latest - the two could drift
apart silently. Make both a tracked, reproducible pair (VLLM_METAL_VERSION +
VLLM_VERSION), fetch the wheel by tag, and add .github/bump_vllm_metal.sh wired
into bump_deps.yaml. It tracks vllm-project/vllm-metal (not vllm/vllm latest),
reading the coupled vLLM source version from vllm-metal's own installer, and
opens a bump PR - mirroring the existing bump_vllm_wheel.sh for the cu130 wheel.

Signed-off-by: Ettore Di Giacinto <mudler@localai.io>
Assisted-by: Claude:opus-4.8 [Claude Code]

* chore(vllm): derive the darwin vLLM version, drop the second pin

Follow-up: VLLM_VERSION was still a hardcoded string duplicating what
VLLM_METAL_VERSION already determines. Derive it at install time from
vllm-metal's own installer (vllm_v=) at the pinned tag - one source of truth,
no second value to drift. The bumper now touches only VLLM_METAL_VERSION;
the derivation is immutable per tag, so builds stay reproducible.

Assisted-by: Claude:opus-4.8 [Claude Code]

* fix(vllm): fetch the vllm-metal wheel without the GitHub API

The darwin build resolved the wheel URL via api.github.com, whose
unauthenticated rate limit (60/hr per IP) 403s on shared macOS runners
(observed after the 9-min vLLM source build). Construct the release-asset
download URL deterministically from the pinned tag and the cp312/arm64 wheel
name instead - no API call, no rate limit. Verified the URL resolves (200).

Signed-off-by: Ettore Di Giacinto <mudler@localai.io>
Assisted-by: Claude:opus-4.8 [Claude Code]

* fix(vllm): fail Score cleanly when the engine returns no prompt_logprobs

Audit of the Score path against vllm-metal (MLX on macOS): the engine accepts
SamplingParams(prompt_logprobs=1) but returns an all-None prompt_logprobs list
rather than computing it, so scoring is not supported there. The old guard
treated the truthy [None] list as valid and silently scored every candidate as
0. Detect the all-None case and return UNIMPLEMENTED instead. No-op on
Linux/CUDA, which populate real entries.

b4c0dc67fe feat(vllm): progressive streaming via parser.extract_tool_calls_streaming (follow-up to #10346) (#10351)
* fix(vllm): don't stream raw tool-call markup as content when a tool parser is active

When a tool_parser is configured and the request carries tools, the streaming
loop emitted every text delta as delta.content — including the model's raw
tool-call markup (e.g. <tool_call>...) — because extract_tool_calls only runs
on the full output after the stream. Clients streaming a tool call therefore
saw the unparsed tool-call syntax as assistant content.

Buffer the text while a tool parser is active for the request; the existing
end-of-stream chat_delta already carries the parsed tool_calls (or the cleaned
content), which the Go side converts to SSE deltas. Non-tool-parser streaming
is unchanged.

Add a server-less regression test covering both the tool-call case (no raw
markup leaked as content) and the plain-text case (content delivered exactly
once — guards against double-emitting the buffered content).

* test(vllm): add expectedFailure test for progressive streaming with tool parser (Case 3, #582)

* feat(vllm): progressive streaming via parser.extract_tool_calls_streaming

When a tool parser is active for a tool-enabled streaming request,
#10346 buffers the entire generation and surfaces it on the final
chunk to prevent raw tool-call markup from leaking as delta.content.
This is correct but turns the request into effectively non-streaming
for plain-text responses — the client sees nothing until the model
stops.

Every concrete tool parser shipped with vLLM 0.23+ already implements
extract_tool_calls_streaming (Granite4, Qwen3Coder, DeepSeekV31, Jamba,
Ernie45, Hermes2Pro, llama3_json, mistral, …). Use it: instantiate
the parser before the streaming loop and call its streaming method per
delta, emitting DeltaMessage(content=…) or DeltaMessage(tool_calls=[…])
when the parser is ready.

Falls back to the existing #10346 buffer path when:
  - the parser does not have extract_tool_calls_streaming, OR
  - extract_tool_calls_streaming raises mid-stream (logged, the
    rest of the request finishes via post-loop extract_tool_calls).

Tests (TestStreamingToolParser):
  1. Buffer path: no markup leaked, no content duplication
  2. Native streaming: plain-text response streams progressively
  3. Native streaming: tool_call structured, no markup leaked
  4. Native streaming exception → graceful fallback, no markup, no crash
  5. No tool parser → unchanged per-delta content stream

E2E verified against qwen3_coder on vLLM 0.23.0 (NVIDIA GB10 / arm64 / CUDA 13).

* docs(vllm): add server-side TTFT benchmark for the streaming tool-parser path

Self-contained stdlib-only script that measures time-to-first-token (TTFT)
for the vLLM backend's two streaming scenarios:

  - tool_call: request mentions a tool; model is expected to call it
  - plain_text: request offers a tool but explicitly asks for prose

Use this to compare:
  - the buffer-all path (#10346)         → plain_text TTFT ≈ total response time
  - the native-streaming path (this PR)  → plain_text TTFT ≈ true first-token time

  python examples/vllm-bench/ttft_streaming_tool_parser.py \\
      --url http://localhost:8080 --model my-coder --runs 3

Lives under examples/ so it does not interfere with the test suite.

* examples/vllm-bench: add long-text scenario (8 paragraphs, 1500 tokens)

The long-text scenario shows the buffering vs streaming difference most
dramatically: with the buffer-all path, the client receives nothing for
20+ seconds and then the entire 1500-token response at once. With native
streaming, the first token arrives in tens of milliseconds and the
response flows progressively.

fix(vllm): structured outputs silently ignored on vLLM >= 0.23

vLLM >= 0.23 removed GuidedDecodingParams (now StructuredOutputsParams) and
renamed the SamplingParams field guided_decoding -> structured_outputs. The
import failed, HAS_GUIDED_DECODING became False, and the whole guided-decoding
block was skipped, so response_format / grammar constraints were silently
ignored. Adapt the existing request.Grammar path to the new class/field.

228a6dfe79 fix(vllm): restore compatibility with vLLM >= 0.22 (get_tokenizer moved to vllm.tokenizers) (#10252)
fix(vllm): restore compatibility with vLLM >= 0.22 (get_tokenizer moved)

vLLM 0.22 moved get_tokenizer from vllm.transformers_utils.tokenizer
to vllm.tokenizers. Since the backend requirements install vllm
unpinned, freshly built/installed vllm backends currently fail to
start with ModuleNotFoundError: No module named
'vllm.transformers_utils.tokenizer' (surfacing as 'grpc service not
ready' when loading a model).

Use the same try/except version-compat import pattern already used
elsewhere in this file: try the new vllm.tokenizers location first and
fall back to the pre-0.22 path.

Tested on a DGX Spark (GB10, ARM64) with the
cuda13-nvidia-l4t-arm64-vllm backend and vllm 0.22.0: model load, chat
completions and tool calls all work with this patch applied.

6a80e23733 feat(middleware): Model routing, PII filtering, Cloud model proxies (#9802)
Add a routing middleware stack and a cloud-proxy backend.

* cloud-proxy: a Go gRPC backend that forwards OpenAI- and
  Anthropic-shaped chat requests to upstream providers, with an
  optional translate mode (OpenAI request -> Anthropic /v1/messages
  -> OpenAI response) and full tool-calling support.

* routing: admission control, content-aware model routing
  (embedding cache + classifier + rerank + Arch-Router score),
  PII detection/redaction (regex + NER) with streaming filter and
  OpenAI/Anthropic adapters, and a per-user/per-key billing recorder
  backed by GORM or in-memory storage.

* middleware: UsageMiddleware records usage via the billing recorder,
  plus admission, route-model, usage-stamp and trace middlewares.

* observability: BackendTrace ring buffer stores full request bodies
  (capped), MITM proxy emits structured trace events, and router
  classifier decisions surface at /api/router/decide.

* gallery: Arch-Router-1.5B (Q4_K_M and Q8_0).

* UI: cloud-proxy model-editor fields, classifier system-prompt and
  score-normalization config, and a Traces page rendering request
  bodies.

5cda4f1ccf fix(L4T13 backends): switch vllm/sglang/vllm-omni to PyPI aarch64+cu130 wheels (#9950)
* fix(vllm): switch L4T13 backend to PyPI aarch64+cu130 wheels

The L4T13 vllm backend pulled torch / torchvision / torchaudio / vllm from
pypi.jetson-ai-lab.io's sbsa/cu130 mirror via [tool.uv.sources] with no
version pins. That mirror started shipping torch 2.11.0 next to a
vllm-0.20.0+cu130 wheel that was still compiled against torch 2.10's c10
ABI, so uv landed on the mismatched pair and vllm crashed at import:

  ImportError: vllm/_C.abi3.so: undefined symbol:
  _ZN3c1013MessageLoggerC1EPKciib

(c10::MessageLogger's constructor signature changed between torch 2.10 and
2.11; the vllm wheel referenced the 2.10 form, the installed libc10.so
exported only the 2.11 form.)

Since torch 2.11 (April 2026) PyPI publishes its own aarch64 + cu130
manylinux wheels, and vllm 0.20.0 ships an aarch64 wheel whose Requires-
Dist locks torch==2.11.0 / torchvision==0.26.0 / torchaudio==2.11.0. That
makes uv's resolver produce an ABI-consistent set automatically, so the
mirror and the [tool.uv.sources] pinning are no longer needed.

flash-attn is dropped from the dep list: PyPI has no aarch64 wheel, but
vLLM 0.20+ already bundles its own vllm_flash_attn (fa2 + fa3) inside the
main wheel, so the Dao-AILab package isn't required at runtime.

* refactor(vllm): retire l4t13 pyproject.toml in favor of requirements-*.txt

pyproject.toml only existed because uv pip install -r requirements.txt
doesn't honor [tool.uv.sources]. The previous commit dropped [tool.uv.
sources] (PyPI now serves the aarch64 + cu130 wheels directly), so the
file no longer carries any logic the requirements-*.txt path can't.

Replace with the same two-file pattern every other build profile uses:

  - requirements-l4t13.txt       (accelerate / torch / transformers /
                                  bitsandbytes - matches cublas13's split)
  - requirements-l4t13-after.txt (vllm; runs after the base resolve so
                                  the cu130 torch wheel lands first)

install.sh's whole l4t13 elif branch goes away; libbackend.sh's
installRequirements already handles the requirements-install.txt build-
deps pass, the C_INCLUDE_PATH export for PORTABLE_PYTHON, and the
runProtogen call, so falling through to the standard else: branch
produces identical install behavior with less surface area.

No functional change at install time - same wheels, same order.

* fix(sglang,vllm-omni): switch L4T13 backends to PyPI aarch64+cu130 wheels

Same root cause and same fix as the vllm backend in the previous commits:
the L4T13 sglang and vllm-omni backends both pulled their accelerator
stack from pypi.jetson-ai-lab.io's sbsa/cu130 mirror with no version
pins, so they would silently land on the same torch 2.11 vs cu130-built
wheel ABI mismatch the moment the mirror published an out-of-sync pair.

sglang
------

- Drop pyproject.toml + [tool.uv.sources]. The historical comment said
  the [all] extra was unsafe on aarch64 because of decord, but sglang
  0.5.x now uses `decord2` on aarch64/arm/armv7l (which ships cp312
  aarch64 wheels), so we can match cublas13's sglang[all]>=0.5.11 pin
  and stop being capped at the 0.5.1.post2 the L4T mirror shipped.
  That unblocks Gemma 4 / MTP recipes on Jetson Thor.
- New requirements-l4t13.txt mirrors the cublas13 split (accelerate /
  torch / torchvision / torchaudio / transformers), requirements-l4t13-
  after.txt carries sglang[all]>=0.5.11.
- install.sh's l4t13 elif branch goes away; falls through to the
  standard installRequirements path.

vllm-omni
---------

- requirements-l4t13.txt drops --extra-index-url to jetson-ai-lab and
  drops flash-attn (PyPI has no aarch64 wheel, vLLM 0.20+ bundles its
  own vllm_flash_attn fa2 + fa3 internally).
- install.sh's l4t13 vllm-install branch collapses into the cublas13
  branch since both now just run `pip install vllm --torch-backend=auto`
  against PyPI.
- --index-strategy=unsafe-best-match is dropped from the top-level
  l4t13 guard; without the L4T mirror in the picture it had no purpose.

The from-source vllm-omni install on top still keeps its existing
`sed -i '/^fa3-fwd[[:space:]]*==/d' requirements/cuda.txt` workaround -
fa3-fwd has no aarch64 wheel and no sdist, unrelated to flash-attn.

* fix(sglang): drop [all] extra on l4t13 - xatlas has no aarch64 wheel

CI revealed that sglang[all]==0.5.12 transitively pulls xatlas via the
[diffusion] sub-extra, and xatlas ships no aarch64 wheel. Its sdist
depends on scikit_build_core without declaring it in build-system.
requires, so under --no-build-isolation uv can't build it from source:

    × Failed to build `xatlas==0.0.11`
    ├─▶ The build backend returned an error
    ╰─▶ Call to `scikit_build_core.build.build_wheel` failed (exit status: 1)
        ModuleNotFoundError: No module named 'scikit_build_core'
    help: `xatlas` (v0.0.11) was included because `sglang[all]` (v0.5.12)
          depends on `xatlas`

Upstream sglang explicitly gates st_attn and vsa on
`platform_machine != aarch64` inside the same [diffusion] extra but
forgot xatlas - same class of bug that bit the old decord pin.

Use plain `sglang>=0.5.11` on l4t13. backend.py imports only base
sglang.srt symbols (Engine, ServerArgs, FunctionCallParser,
ReasoningParser); the [all] extras are optional accelerators not
required at import time. cublas13 (x86_64) keeps [all] because xatlas
has x86_64 wheels there.

16b2d4c807 fix(python-backend): make JIT subprocesses work on hosts of any size (#9679)
Two related runtime fixes for Python backends that JIT-compile CUDA
kernels at first model load (FlashInfer, PyTorch inductor, triton):

1. libbackend.sh: replace `source ${EDIR}/venv/bin/activate` with a
   minimal manual setup (_activateVenv: export VIRTUAL_ENV, prepend
   PATH, unset PYTHONHOME) computed from $EDIR at runtime. `uv venv`
   and `python -m venv` both bake the create-time absolute path into
   bin/activate (e.g. VIRTUAL_ENV='/vllm/venv' from the Docker build
   stage), so sourcing activate on a relocated venv — copied out of
   the build container and unpacked at an arbitrary backend dir —
   prepends a stale, non-existent path to $PATH. Pip-installed CLI
   tools (e.g. ninja, used by FlashInfer's NVFP4 GEMM JIT) are then
   never found and the load aborts with FileNotFoundError. Doing the
   env setup ourselves matches what `uv run` does internally and
   sidesteps the relocation problem entirely. Generic — every Python
   backend benefits.

2. vllm/run.sh: replace ninja's default -j$(nproc)+2 with an adaptive
   MAX_JOBS = min(nproc, (MemAvailable-4)/4). Each concurrent
   nvcc/cudafe++ peaks at multiple GiB; the default OOM-kills on
   memory-tight hosts (e.g. a 16 GiB desktop loading a 27B NVFP4
   model) but underutilises 100-core / 1 TB boxes. User-set MAX_JOBS
   still wins. Also pin NVCC_THREADS=2 unless overridden.

8e43842175 feat(vllm, distributed): tensor parallel distributed workers (#9612)
* feat(vllm): build vllm from source for Intel XPU

Upstream publishes no XPU wheels for vllm. The Intel profile was
silently picking up a non-XPU wheel that imported but errored at
engine init, and several runtime deps (pillow, charset-normalizer,
chardet) were missing on Intel -- backend.py crashed at import time
before the gRPC server came up.

Switch the Intel profile to upstream's documented from-source
procedure (docs/getting_started/installation/gpu.xpu.inc.md in
vllm-project/vllm):

  - Bump portable Python to 3.12 -- vllm-xpu-kernels ships only a
    cp312 wheel.
  - Source /opt/intel/oneapi/setvars.sh so vllm's CMake build sees
    the dpcpp/sycl compiler from the oneapi-basekit base image.
  - Hide requirements-intel-after.txt during installRequirements
    (it used to 'pip install vllm'); install vllm's deps from a
    fresh git clone of vllm via 'uv pip install -r
    requirements/xpu.txt', swap stock triton for
    triton-xpu==3.7.0, then 'VLLM_TARGET_DEVICE=xpu uv pip install
    --no-deps .'.
  - requirements-intel.txt trimmed to LocalAI's direct deps
    (accelerate / transformers / bitsandbytes); torch-xpu, vllm,
    vllm_xpu_kernels and the rest come from upstream's xpu.txt
    during the source build.
  - requirements.txt: add pillow + charset-normalizer + chardet --
    used by backend.py and missing on the Intel install profile.
  - run.sh: 'set -x' so backend startup is visible in container
    logs (the gRPC startup error path was previously opaque).

Also adds a one-line docs example for engine_args.attention_backend
under the vLLM section, since older XE-HPG GPUs (e.g. Arc A770)
need TRITON_ATTN to bypass the cutlass path in vllm_xpu_kernels.

Tested end-to-end on an Intel Arc A770 with Qwen2.5-0.5B-Instruct
via LocalAI's /v1/chat/completions.

* feat(vllm): add multi-node data-parallel follower worker

vLLM v1's multi-node story is one process per node sharing a DP
coordinator over ZMQ -- the head runs the API server with
data_parallel_size > 1 and followers run `vllm serve --headless ...`
with matching topology. Today LocalAI can already configure DP on the
head via the engine_args YAML map, but there's no way to bring up the
follower nodes -- so the head sits waiting for ranks that never
handshake.

Add `local-ai p2p-worker vllm`, mirroring MLXDistributed's structural
precedent (operator-launched, static config, no NATS placement). The
worker:

  - Optionally self-registers with the frontend as an agent-type node
    tagged `node.role=vllm-follower` so it's visible in the admin UI
    and operators can scope ordinary models away via inverse
    selectors.
  - Resolves the platform-specific vllm backend via the gallery's
    "vllm" meta-entry (cuda*, intel-vllm, rocm-vllm, ...).
  - Runs vLLM as a child process so the heartbeat goroutine survives
    until vLLM exits; forwards SIGINT/SIGTERM so vLLM can clean up its
    ZMQ sockets before we tear down.
  - Validates --headless + --start-rank 0 is rejected (rank 0 is the
    head and must serve the API).

Backend run.sh dispatches `serve` as the first arg to vllm's own CLI
instead of LocalAI's backend.py gRPC server -- the follower speaks
ZMQ directly to the head, there is no LocalAI gRPC on the follower
side. Single-node usage is unchanged.

Generalises the gallery resolution helper into findBackendPath()
shared by MLX and vLLM workers; extracts ParseNodeLabels for the
comma-separated label parsing both use.

Ships with two compose recipes (`docker-compose.vllm-multinode.yaml`
for NVIDIA, `docker-compose.vllm-multinode.intel.yaml` for Intel
XPU/xccl) plus `tests/e2e/vllm-multinode/smoke.sh`. Both vendors are
supported (NCCL for CUDA/ROCm, xccl for XPU) but mixed-vendor DP is
not -- PyTorch's process group requires every rank to use the same
collective backend, and NCCL/xccl/gloo don't interoperate.

Out of scope (deferred): SmartRouter-driven placement of follower
ranks via NATS backend.install events, follower log streaming through
/api/backend-logs, tensor-parallel across nodes, disaggregated
prefill via KVTransferConfig.

* test(vllm): CPU-only end-to-end test for multi-node DP

Adds tests/e2e/vllm-multinode/, a Ginkgo + testcontainers-go suite
that brings up a head + headless follower from the locally-built
local-ai:tests image, bind-mounts the cpu-vllm backend extracted by
make extract-backend-vllm so it's seen as a system backend (no gallery
fetch, no registry server), and asserts a chat completion across both
DP ranks. New `make test-e2e-vllm-multinode` target wires the docker
build, backend extract, and ginkgo run together; BuildKit caches both
images so re-runs only rebuild what changed. Tagged Label("VLLMMultinode")
so the existing distributed suite isn't pulled along.

Two pre-existing bugs surfaced by the test:

1. extract-backend-% (Makefile) failed for every backend, because all
   backend images end with `FROM scratch` and `docker create` rejects
   an image with no CMD/ENTRYPOINT. Fixed by passing
   --entrypoint=/run.sh -- the container is never started, only
   docker-cp'd, so the path doesn't have to exist; we just need
   anything that satisfies the daemon's create-time validation.

2. backend/python/vllm/run.sh's `serve` shortcut for the multi-node DP
   follower exec'd ${EDIR}/venv/bin/vllm directly, but uv bakes an
   absolute build-time shebang (`#!/vllm/venv/bin/python3`) that no
   longer resolves once the backend is relocated to BackendsPath.
   _makeVenvPortable's shebang rewriter only matches paths that
   already point at ${EDIR}, so the original shebang slips through
   unchanged. Fixed by exec-ing ${EDIR}/venv/bin/python with the script
   as an argument -- Python ignores the script's shebang in that case.

The test fixture caps memory aggressively (max_model_len=512,
VLLM_CPU_KVCACHE_SPACE=1, TORCH_COMPILE_DISABLE=1) so two CPU engines
fit on a 32 GB box. TORCH_COMPILE_DISABLE is currently mandatory for
cpu-vllm: torch._inductor's CPU-ISA probe runs even with
enforce_eager=True and needs g++ on PATH, which the LocalAI runtime
image doesn't ship -- to be addressed in a follow-up that bundles a
toolchain in the cpu-vllm backend.

* feat(vllm): bundle a g++ toolchain in the cpu-vllm backend image

torch._inductor's CPU-ISA probe (`cpu_model_runner.py:65 "Warming up
model for the compilation"`) shells out to `g++` at vllm engine
startup, regardless of `enforce_eager=True` -- the eager flag only
disables CUDA graphs, not inductor's first-batch warmup. The LocalAI
CPU runtime image (Dockerfile, unconditional apt list) does not ship
build-essential, and the cpu-vllm backend image is `FROM scratch`,
so any non-trivial inference on cpu-vllm crashes with:

  torch._inductor.exc.InductorError:
    InvalidCxxCompiler: No working C++ compiler found in
    torch._inductor.config.cpp.cxx: (None, 'g++')

Bundling the toolchain in the CPU runtime image would bloat every
non-vllm-CPU deployment and force a single GCC version on backends
that may want clang or a different version. So this lives in the
backend, gated to BUILD_TYPE=='' (the CPU profile).

`package.sh` snapshots g++ + binutils + cc1plus + libstdc++ + libc6
(runtime + dev) + the math libs cc1plus links (libisl/libmpc/libmpfr/
libjansson) into ${BACKEND}/toolchain/, mirroring /usr/... layout. The
unversioned binaries on Debian/Ubuntu are symlink chains pointing into
multiarch packages (`g++` -> `g++-13` -> `x86_64-linux-gnu-g++-13`,
the latter in `g++-13-x86-64-linux-gnu`), so the package list resolves
both the version and the arch-triplet variant. Symlinks /lib ->
usr/lib and /lib64 -> usr/lib64 are recreated under the toolchain
root because Ubuntu's UsrMerge keeps them at /, and ld scripts
(`libc.so`, `libm.so`) hardcode `/lib/...` paths that --sysroot
re-roots into the toolchain.

The unversioned `g++`/`gcc`/`cpp` symlinks are replaced with wrapper
shell scripts that resolve their own location at runtime and pass
`--sysroot=<toolchain>` and `-B <toolchain>/usr/lib/gcc/<triplet>/<ver>/`
to the underlying versioned binary. That's how torch's bare `g++ foo.cpp
-o foo` invocation finds cc1plus (-B), system headers (--sysroot), and
the bundled libstdc++ (--sysroot, --sysroot is recursive into linker).

`run.sh` adds the toolchain bin dir to PATH and the toolchain's
shared-lib dir to LD_LIBRARY_PATH -- everything else (header search,
linker search, executable search) is encapsulated in the wrappers.
No-op for non-CPU builds, the dir doesn't exist there.

The cpu-vllm image grows by ~217 MB. Tradeoff is acceptable -- cpu-vllm
is already a niche profile (few users compared to GPU vllm) and the
alternative is a backend that crashes at first inference unless the
operator manually sets TORCH_COMPILE_DISABLE=1, which silently disables
all torch.compile optimizations.

Drops `TORCH_COMPILE_DISABLE=1` from tests/e2e/vllm-multinode -- the
smoke now exercises the real compile path through the bundled toolchain.
Test runtime is +20s for the warmup compile, still <90s end to end.

* fix(vllm): scope jetson-ai-lab index to L4T-specific wheels via pyproject.toml

The L4T arm64 build resolves dependencies through pypi.jetson-ai-lab.io,
which hosts the L4T-specific torch / vllm / flash-attn wheels but also
transparently proxies the rest of PyPI through `/+f/<sha>/<filename>`
URLs. With `--extra-index-url` + `--index-strategy=unsafe-best-match`
uv would pick those proxy URLs for ordinary PyPI packages —
anthropic/openai/propcache/annotated-types — and fail when the proxy
503s. Master is hitting the same bug on its own l4t-vllm matrix entry.

Switch the l4t13 install path to a pyproject.toml that marks the
jetson-ai-lab index `explicit = true` and pins only torch, torchvision,
torchaudio, flash-attn, and vllm to it via [tool.uv.sources]. uv won't
consult the L4T mirror for anything else, so transitive deps fall back
to PyPI as the default index — no exposure to the proxy 503s.

`uv pip install -r requirements.txt` ignores [tool.uv.sources], so the
l4t13 branch in install.sh now invokes `uv pip install --requirement
pyproject.toml` directly, replacing the old requirements-l4t13*.txt
files. Other BUILD_PROFILEs continue using libbackend.sh's
installRequirements and never read pyproject.toml.

Local resolution test (x86_64, dry-run) confirms uv hits the L4T
index for torch and falls through to PyPI for everything else.

80961d2da6 feat(backends/python): use tempfile.gettempdir() instead of hardcoded /tmp (#9629)
Closes #9601

Makes the temporary scratch paths in vllm, vllm-omni, tinygrad, and pocket-tts
backends configurable via the standard TMPDIR env var, instead of always writing
to /tmp. This is a one-line change per call site that calls tempfile.gettempdir()
for the directory and keeps the same filename suffix.

Users who run on systems with a small root partition (or want to relocate scratch
files to a larger volume) can now redirect these by setting TMPDIR
(e.g. TMPDIR=/data/tmp), without affecting the existing LOCALAI_GENERATED_CONTENT_PATH
or LOCALAI_UPLOAD_PATH options that already cover other temp paths.

4916f8c880 feat(vllm): expose AsyncEngineArgs via generic engine_args YAML map (#9563)
* feat(vllm): expose AsyncEngineArgs via generic engine_args YAML map

LocalAI's vLLM backend wraps a small typed subset of vLLM's
AsyncEngineArgs (quantization, tensor_parallel_size, dtype, etc.).
Anything outside that subset -- pipeline/data/expert parallelism,
speculative_config, kv_transfer_config, all2all_backend, prefix
caching, chunked prefill, etc. -- requires a new protobuf field, a
Go struct field, an options.go line, and a backend.py mapping per
feature. That cadence is the bottleneck on shipping vLLM's
production feature set.

Add a generic `engine_args:` map on the model YAML that is
JSON-serialised into a new ModelOptions.EngineArgs proto field and
applied verbatim to AsyncEngineArgs at LoadModel time. Validation
is done by the Python backend via dataclasses.fields(); unknown
keys fail with the closest valid name as a hint.
dataclasses.replace() is used so vLLM's __post_init__ re-runs and
auto-converts dict values into nested config dataclasses
(CompilationConfig, AttentionConfig, ...). speculative_config and
kv_transfer_config flow through as dicts; vLLM converts them at
engine init.

Operators can now write:

  engine_args:
    data_parallel_size: 8
    enable_expert_parallel: true
    all2all_backend: deepep_low_latency
    speculative_config:
      method: deepseek_mtp
      num_speculative_tokens: 3
    kv_cache_dtype: fp8

without further proto/Go/Python plumbing per field.

Production defaults seeded by hooks_vllm.go: enable_prefix_caching
and enable_chunked_prefill default to true unless explicitly set.

Existing typed YAML fields (gpu_memory_utilization,
tensor_parallel_size, etc.) remain for back-compat; engine_args
overrides them when both are set.

* chore(vllm): pin cublas13 to vLLM 0.20.0 cu130 wheel

vLLM's PyPI wheel is built against CUDA 12 (libcudart.so.12) and won't
load on a cu130 host. Switch the cublas13 build to vLLM's per-tag cu130
simple-index (https://wheels.vllm.ai/0.20.0/cu130/) and pin
vllm==0.20.0. The cu130-flavoured wheel ships libcudart.so.13 and
includes the DFlash speculative-decoding method that landed in 0.20.0.

cublas13 install gets --index-strategy=unsafe-best-match so uv consults
both the cu130 index and PyPI when resolving — PyPI also publishes
vllm==0.20.0, but with cu12 binaries that error at import time.

Verified: Qwen3.5-4B + z-lab/Qwen3.5-4B-DFlash loads and serves chat
completions on RTX 5070 Ti (sm_120, cu130).

* ci(vllm): bot job to bump cublas13 vLLM wheel pin

vLLM's cu130 wheel index URL is itself version-locked
(wheels.vllm.ai/<TAG>/cu130/, no /latest/ alias upstream), so a vLLM
bump means rewriting two values atomically — the URL segment and the
version constraint. bump_deps.sh handles git-sha-in-Makefile only;
add a sibling bump_vllm_wheel.sh and a matching workflow job that
mirrors the existing matrix's PR-creation pattern.

The bumper queries /releases/latest (which excludes prereleases),
strips the leading 'v', and seds both lines unconditionally. When the
file is already on the latest tag the rewrite is a no-op and
peter-evans/create-pull-request opens no PR.

* docs(vllm): document engine_args and speculative decoding

The new engine_args: map plumbs arbitrary AsyncEngineArgs through to
vLLM, but the public docs only covered the basic typed fields. Add a
short subsection in the vLLM section explaining the typed/generic
split and showing a worked DFlash speculative-decoding config, with
pointers to vLLM's SpeculativeConfig reference and z-lab's drafter
collection.

73aacad2f9 fix(vllm): drop flash-attn wheel to avoid torch 2.10 ABI mismatch (#9557)
The pinned flash-attn 2.8.3+cu12torch2.7 wheel breaks at import time
once vllm 0.19.1 upgrades torch to its hard-pinned 2.10.0:

  ImportError: .../flash_attn_2_cuda...so: undefined symbol:
  _ZN3c104cuda29c10_cuda_check_implementationEiPKcS2_ib

That C10 CUDA symbol is libtorch-version-specific. Dao-AILab has not yet
published flash-attn wheels for torch 2.10 -- the latest release (2.8.3)
tops out at torch 2.8 -- so any wheel pinned here is silently ABI-broken
the moment vllm completes its install.

vllm 0.19.1 lists flashinfer-python==0.6.6 as a hard dep, which already
covers the attention path. The only other use of flash-attn in vllm is
the rotary apply_rotary import in
vllm/model_executor/layers/rotary_embedding/common.py, which is guarded
by find_spec("flash_attn") and falls back cleanly when absent.

Also unpin torch in requirements-cublas12.txt: the 2.7.0 pin only
existed to give the flash-attn wheel a matching torch to link against.
With flash-attn gone, vllm's own torch==2.10.0 dep is the binding
constraint regardless of what we put here.
