feat(chat): local-ai chat is now a terminal agent (#11291)
* chore(deps): bump cogito to v0.11 ahead of the nib harness nib is the agent harness that becomes 'local-ai chat'. It requires cogito v0.11, so pull that bump forward on its own: minimal version selection would apply it to LocalAI anyway, and both repos use cogito and cogito/clients. Landing it separately keeps the harness change reviewable. nib itself is not pinned yet. Nothing in LocalAI imports it, and 'go mod tidy' runs as a goreleaser before-hook in CI, so an unimported require line does not survive. It lands with its first importer. No LocalAI call site needed a change. Both cogito.WithMaxAttempts callers guard the argument above zero, so v0.11's new clamp is unreachable, and LocalAI's Multimedia values implement only URL(), so v0.11's new TypedMultimedia routing treats them as images exactly as v0.10 did. Binary size (cmd/local-ai): 200,301,381 -> 200,336,045 bytes (+34,664). A throwaway probe that links nib measured 201,042,243 bytes (+740,862 over the pre-change baseline). The normal error handler sends an OpenAI error envelope, which arrives as *openai.APIError; the opaque-errors handler replies with a bare status and no body, which arrives as *openai.RequestError. Classifying on only one of them misses half the cases, so the status is read from either. A cancelled probe is not reported as an unreachable server, because it learned nothing about the endpoint, and neither is a reply that could not be parsed, because something did answer. Both would otherwise send the user off to start a server that may already be running. The model list is returned verbatim and in server order. LocalAI lists whatever it finds in the models directory, including stray archives and dotfiles, and deciding which advertised ids are real belongs to whoever presents them. Ctrl+C was already safe, but only incidentally, because the child shares this process' foreground process group. A signal handler rather than Pdeathsig on the child. Pdeathsig is Linux-only and, in Go, is delivered when the OS thread that forked exits rather than when the process does, so it can fire on a healthy parent. Setpgid would break the Ctrl+C that works today by taking the child out of the foreground group. SIGHUP joins SIGINT and SIGTERM: a terminal program whose terminal is gone has nobody left to talk to. The same context is what cancels the agent, which nib leaves to its embedder. SIGHUP has no such backstop, and registering for it removed the default disposition that used to end the process outright, so kill -HUP left a live TUI with a cancelled context and the started server still running. runSession watches the context alongside the agent and stops the server the moment it is cancelled, so the guarantee no longer depends on what the agent does with cancellation. Stop is idempotent, so the deferred call stays correct and free. The doc comment on shutdownContext described the mechanism it was supposed to work by rather than the one that does. Corrected, bubbletea's handler included. ResolveModel now checks the chooser's answer against what it offered. The shipped chooser answers by list index and cannot be wrong, but ModelChooser is exported, the answer is persisted, and every later run starts against it, so the invariant belongs at the consumer. Read-only tools are unaffected and still run. ExitStatus already unwraps app.ExitError, so the code propagates with no change here. - RunTUI passes the context to bubbletea and gives up bubbletea's own signal handler, which makes shutdownContext the single owner of the signal and stops a SIGHUP leaving a wedged TUI behind. Verified against a live server on 127.0.0.1:8080: the three --init shells, a piped prompt exiting 0, a denied 'touch' that left no file and exited 3, a read-only 'ls' that still ran and exited 0, and a SIGHUP that unwound a TUI running under a pty. Two comment blocks in run.go described the old TUI behavior and are now wrong, so they are corrected in the same change. No behavior change: both shutdownContext and runSession are untouched, and stopping the server on cancellation is still worth keeping independent of how promptly nib unwinds. One known gap, not addressed here. The widget --init now emits runs 'output=$(local-ai chat --height 50%)', and runAgent injects Stdout unconditionally, so under $(...) nib refuses the TUI for a non-terminal stream. This is the cost the runAgent comment already anticipated, now that the snippets no longer hardcode standalone nib. Ctrl+Space should not be documented until that is decided. Verified against a pty before and after. nib reads a nil stream as "not injected" and falls back to the process stream, which is how an embedder asks for nib's own behavior. That is what stdout needs: the interface renders on /dev/tty but writes the chosen command to stdout even when stdout is a pipe, and that write is the whole of the shell-capture idiom. Stdin is deliberately left injected. A piped or redirected stdin really is ignored by the interface, so the refusal is the honest answer there, and it is the one users meet: 'echo q | local-ai chat' still says to re-run with --cli, once, exit 1. Nilling stdin the way stdout is nilled would delete that silently. Stderr is not gated by nib at all and is unchanged. One case does change and cannot be kept: 'local-ai chat > out.txt' from a terminal no longer refuses, because it is indistinguishable from the widget. It renders on /dev/tty and writes the capture line to the file, which is what standalone nib does. The app.Options literal moves into agentOptions so the decision is reachable from a spec rather than being a detail of a function that takes the terminal. Both sides of the asymmetry are pinned: reinstating 'Stdout: opts.Out' fails "hands nib nothing for the process stdout", and nilling stdin fails "hands the process stdin over". Also rewrites the last comments describing the pre-v0.5.1 behavior. That sentence had replaced the removed /exit and /quit text, so the page was left with no working way to leave a session. Document both modes, since they differ. The plugin warning said nothing tells you the install stopped short. It does: the command prints that the plugin was left disabled. What it does not do is say so in its exit code, which is 0 either way. That is the part a script cannot work around, and it is the reason to pass --yes. Overstating it in the paragraph that gives the advice only makes the advice easier to dismiss. Redirecting stdout no longer refuses; the interface goes to /dev/tty and only the yanked command reaches the file. It is what lets the Ctrl+Space widget capture a command at all, since a redirect and out=$(...) are the same thing to the stream gate. It was documented nowhere. A non-terminal stdin is still refused, and the new text says which of the two it is. Defaults are seeds: they sit beneath the config file, so the file silently undoes them. That made the flags accepted and inert, and not in an edge case, since EnsureStateDir writes base_url on the first run and the interactive picker writes model, so from the second run on the file carried a value for both. Observed against a live server: with base_url: http://127.0.0.1:9999/v1 in the config and --endpoint http://127.0.0.1:8080 on the command line, the probe hit 8080 and every agent turn posted to 9999. With model: gemma-4-e2b-it-qat-q4_0 in the config, --model lfm2.5-8b-a1b was ignored on the wire. nib v0.6.0 adds app.Options.Overrides, applied above the config file and above the bare environment block. Move the whole block there: all five values are decisions this invocation already made on the user's behalf, and a flag the config file can undo is not a flag. Nothing is left in Defaults, because LocalAI's one genuine seed, the initial base_url, is written into the config file by EnsureStateDir rather than handed to nib. Two limits come with the channel and are documented on agentOptions rather than worked around. An override can only raise a field, since nib cannot tell "set to the zero value" from "not set", so --yolo can turn approval off but nothing on the command line turns it back on over an approval_mode: auto in the file. And nib's own NIB_TRACE_DIR and NIB_YOLO are resolved after the config load and still outrank these, deliberately, upstream. The existing spec pinned that the right values reach app.Options, which they always did, which is exactly why it could not see nib discarding them. The new specs resolve the config the way app.Run resolves it, against a real config file that disagrees with every flag, and one asserts Defaults stays empty. docs/content/features/terminal-agent.md already documented --model as winning over the saved model; that was false before this change and is true now, so no docs edit was needed. feat(stores): add Valkey Search vector store backend (#11196)
* feat: add Valkey Search vector store backend Add a new built-in Go gRPC store backend 'valkey-store' that implements the four Stores RPCs (Set/Get/Delete/Find) against the Valkey Search module (FT.*) using the pure-Go github.com/valkey-io/valkey-go client. It is selected via the existing per-request 'backend' field on /stores, so there is no proto or HTTP API change, and it mirrors the in-memory local-store while adding persistence across restarts and opt-in HNSW. Each vector is a Valkey HASH keyed by hex(little-endian float32); the index is created lazily on first Set (FLAT+COSINE by default), cosine similarity is derived as 1-distance, and namespaces get a collision-resistant token. Includes unit tests (valkey-go mock) and env-gated integration tests against valkey/valkey-bundle, plus build/matrix/gallery wiring and docs. chore: bump go-processmanager to pick up the concurrent-Run fix (#11004)
Picks up mudler/go-processmanager#7, which closes the check-then-act window in Run's "already started" guard. Concurrent Run calls on one handle could each observe a nil p.proc, each start a process and each launch a monitor goroutine; every monitor does `defer close(p.done)` against a channel created once in New, so the second monitor to see its process exit panicked on close of a closed channel. The same window raced on p.proc itself. LocalAI does not hit this today: the only New/Run pair (pkg/model/process.go:178-191) runs a freshly created handle, and core/services/worker/supervisor.go only ever calls Stop on handles it holds. The bump is defensive, and keeps the dependency from drifting further behind a fix in the process lifecycle we rely on. No exported signature changes upstream; ErrProcessAlreadyRun is additive and keeps the historical "command already started" prefix, so any caller matching on that text is unaffected. Nothing in this repo matches it. Verified: go build ./core/... ./pkg/... clean; go vet clean; go test -race ./pkg/model/ ./core/services/worker/ both ok. * fix(worker): reap deleted backends and stop models that live on a worker
Three related backend-lifecycle defects, all reachable from the same
production incident on a Jetson/Thor worker: a deleted backend's gRPC
process survived ~40 minutes with its directory removed from disk, a later
model load was routed to that orphan and failed with a certifi path pointing
into the deleted directory, and the admin could not stop the model because
the frontend reported it as not loaded.
1. backend.delete orphaned the process it claimed to delete
------------------------------------------------------------
s.processes is keyed by `modelID#replicaIndex` (buildProcessKey), so the
backend name never appeared in a key and was recorded nowhere on the
process. backend.delete resolved its target via isRunning/stopBackend, whose
prefix path only matches a bare *modelID* - a delete keyed on a backend name
resolved to zero keys, the stop silently no-op'd, and the files were removed
out from under a live process.
The install fast path then handed that orphan back out: it returns any live
process for the (model, replica) slot without checking which backend started
it, so a reinstalled variant inherited the deleted backend's port.
- Record backendName on backendProcess, threaded installBackend ->
startBackend.
- Add resolveProcessKeysForBackend, matching the recorded name and resolving
alias <-> concrete via ListSystemBackends *before* DeleteBackendFromSystem
erases the metadata that carries the alias. Alias resolution failure
degrades to name-only matching so a delete never fails on it.
- backend.stop goes through resolveStopTargets, which accepts a backend
name, a model name, or an exact modelID#replica key. Its payload field is
named "backend" but is published with all three meanings: the admin UI
sends a backend name, UnloadRemoteModel sends a model name, and the
router's abandoned-load reap (#10948) sends an exact replica key.
Narrowing it to backend names alone would strand the latter two.
backend.delete stays strict - its identifier is unambiguously a backend.
- Gate the install fast path on processMatchesBackend so a slot held by a
different backend is restarted rather than reused. Processes with no
recorded name (pre-upgrade) are accepted, so rollout does not restart
every running backend.
- stopBackendExact reports a real stop failure - the process still being
alive afterwards, which is precisely what finishBackendStop already
detects to keep the entry and its port reserved - and backend.delete no
longer replies success when it knew about a process and could not kill it.
"No process was running" stays a success but is logged, so the orphan case
is visible rather than silent.
2. /backend/shutdown reported a running model as missing
---------------------------------------------------------
ModelLoader.deleteProcess short-circuits on a miss in this replica's
in-memory store. In distributed mode the authoritative record of "is this
model loaded" is the shared node registry: a frontend replica that never
served the model itself (load balancer picked a peer, or the replica
restarted) has no local entry. The remote unload path that pkg/model
documents ("when ShutdownModel is called for a model with no local process,
UnloadRemoteModel is called") sat behind that short-circuit, unreachable in
exactly the case it exists for. #10865 reworked this function but kept the
short-circuit at the top, so the gap survived that refactor.
- deleteProcess consults the remote unloader on a local-store miss, via a
shared unloadRemote helper so this branch and the existing
no-local-process branch both prefer #10865's RemoteModelContextUnloader,
preserving force propagation across the distributed boundary.
- UnloadRemoteModelContext reports ErrRemoteModelNotLoaded when no node has
the model; it previously returned nil, making a no-op stop
indistinguishable from a real one. The converse case (nodes have it, none
could be stopped) already errors since #10865 joined the per-node
failures, so that half of the original fix was dropped as redundant.
- Only when the model is absent locally AND cluster-wide does the endpoint
report not-found, now 404 naming both scopes rather than a bare 500.
- modelNotFoundErr becomes the exported ErrModelNotFound so the HTTP layer
can map it without string matching; watchdog's identity comparison becomes
errors.Is.
3. Coverage for the bounded Free() that #10865 shipped untested
----------------------------------------------------------------
The original branch also bounded the pre-stop Free(), but #10865 landed that
fix first (workerBackendFreeTimeout, applied in both stopBackendExact and
handleModelUnload). That production change is therefore DROPPED here as
superseded - master's version is strictly better, since it also releases the
supervisor mutex across the call and keeps the port reserved until
termination completes.
What #10865 did not ship is a test, and the bound is load-bearing: the
router-side reap in #10948 sends backend.stop for an abandoned load, and
against a wedged backend an unbounded Free would swallow that stop before it
reached the process. Nothing failed if the bound regressed.
The spec stands up a real gRPC backend server whose Free handler never
returns - what a Python backend looks like when its single worker thread
(PYTHON_GRPC_MAX_WORKERS=1 on 37 backends) is occupied by a stuck LoadModel.
A stub socket is not sufficient and was tried first: without a completed
HTTP/2 handshake, gRPC's own ~20s connect timeout ends the call, so that
version passed against the very bug it targets. With the connection READY,
only the caller's deadline can end it, so the spec hangs to its 60s limit if
the timeout is removed and passes with it.
Its fixture process is deliberately never started. go-processmanager v0.1.1
writes Process.pid from readPID() without synchronization, so a live process
races its own monitor goroutine under -race - reproducible with a bare
Run()+Stop() and unrelated to this spec. Since
scripts/model-lifecycle-conformance.sh runs this package with -race and is
fail-closed, starting one would turn that gate red on an upstream defect. An
unstarted process still proves the point: the stop is reached and the slot
released, which is exactly what an unbounded Free prevents.
Verified: make lint (new-from-merge-base origin/master) reports 0 issues;
scripts/model-lifecycle-conformance.sh passes all three stages including the
FizzBee liveness check (1458 states, IsLive: true).

Bumps github.com/mudler/skillserver to a7317cb, which drops the Name field from both SkillInfo and SearchResult and leaves ID as the single canonical identifier (already what read_skill consumes). Adds core/services/skills/skills_mcp_test.go, a regression that drives the LocalAI FilesystemManager through an in-process MCP session and asserts a newly-created skill is visible by ID on the still-open session. This is a cleanup, not the root cause of #9868 - the reporter likely sees something deeper than a cosmetic JSON shape issue. * feat(gallery): verify backend OCI images with keyless cosign Close a trust gap where a registry compromise or MITM could silently replace a backend image: the gallery YAML tells LocalAI which image to pull, but until now nothing verified the bytes came from our CI. Consumer (pkg/oci/cosignverify): - New package using sigstore-go to verify keyless-cosign signatures. - OCI 1.1 referrers API + new bundle format (no legacy :tag.sig). - Policy fields: Issuer / IssuerRegex / Identity / IdentityRegex / NotBefore. NotBefore is the revocation lever — keyless Fulcio certs are ephemeral so revocation is policy-side; advancing not_before in the gallery YAML invalidates every signature predating the cutoff. - TUF trusted root cached process-wide so N backends from one gallery do 1 fetch, not N. Plumbing: - pkg/downloader: ImageVerifier interface + WithImageVerifier option threaded through DownloadFileWithContext. Verification runs between oci.GetImage and oci.ExtractOCIImage, with digest pinning via pinnedImageRef to close the TOCTOU window. * fix(http): close 0.0.0.0/[::] SSRF bypass in /api/cors-proxy The CORS proxy carried its own private-network blocklist (RFC 1918 + a handful of IPv6 ranges) instead of using the same classification as pkg/utils/urlfetch.go. The hand-rolled list missed 0.0.0.0/8 and ::/128, both of which Linux routes to localhost — so any user with FeatureMCP (default-on for new users) could reach LocalAI's own listener and any other service bound to 0.0.0.0:port via: GET /api/cors-proxy?url=http://0.0.0.0:8080/... GET /api/cors-proxy?url=http://[::]:8080/... Replace the custom check with utils.IsPublicIP (Go stdlib IsLoopback / IsLinkLocalUnicast / IsPrivate / IsUnspecified, plus IPv4-mapped IPv6 unmasking) and add an upfront hostname rejection for localhost, *.local, and the cloud metadata aliases so split-horizon DNS can't paper over the IP check. The IP-pinning DialContext is unchanged: the validated IP from the single resolution is reused for the connection, so DNS rebinding still cannot swap a public answer for a private one between validate and dial. (commit 941ac52, merged into main): in-process collections backend now registers a placeholder for every on-disk collection at startup — even when the engine wrapper fails to construct (typically because the embedding model is briefly unreachable) — and rehydrates lazily on first access. Previously a transient outage at LocalAI boot silently dropped every existing collection from the agent pool's in-memory map; users saw "collection not found" indefinitely until LocalAI was restarted, even after the embedding service recovered. With this bump the next request to the collection rehydrates it transparently. Does not address the deeper LocalRecall issue where NewPersistentPostgresCollection probes the embedding model at engine construction even for read-only paths — that needs a separate fix in mudler/localrecall. LocalRecall switched its PDF extractor from gen2brain/go-fitz (cgo + static libmupdf) to klippa-app/go-pdfium with the WebAssembly backend (no cgo, no static libs, no glibc symbol issues). This bump pulls in the new shape via LocalAGI@main → LocalRecall@a7724fe. Why this matters: the previous go-fitz approach broke aarch64 LocalAI builds with `__isoc23_strtol undefined reference` link errors — go-fitz's bundled libmupdf static library is compiled against glibc ≥ 2.38 (C2x strtol intrinsics) but the LocalAI builder uses older glibc. The WASM backend has no native dependencies; same Go binary works on every architecture. * fix(auth): cascade user deletion across all owned data on PostgreSQL Deleting a user from the admin UI in distributed mode (PostgreSQL auth DB) returned "user not found" even when the user clearly existed. The old handler ignored result.Error and only checked RowsAffected, so a foreign-key constraint violation surfaced as a misleading 404. Two issues drove this: 1. invite_codes.created_by / used_by reference users(id) but the InviteCode model declared the FKs without ON DELETE CASCADE. On PostgreSQL the engine therefore rejected the user delete with NO ACTION whenever the user had ever issued or consumed an invite. On SQLite (default in single-node mode) FKs are not enforced, so the bug never appeared there. 2. Several owned tables were never cleaned up regardless of dialect: user_permissions and quota_rules relied on CASCADE that does not fire under SQLite, and usage_records have no FK at all and were left orphaned in every dialect. Introduce auth.DeleteUserCascade which runs the full cleanup in a single transaction: drop invites authored by the user, NULL used_by on invites they consumed (preserves the audit trail), and explicitly wipe sessions, API keys, permissions, quota rules, and usage metrics before deleting the user. The in-memory quota cache is invalidated after commit so a recreated user with the same id never sees stale entries. The HTTP handler now maps the helper's errors to proper status codes — real failures surface as 500 with the cause instead of being swallowed as "not found". Add Ginkgo regression coverage in core/http/auth/users_test.go and core/http/routes/auth_test.go covering invite cleanup, used_by null-out, full data wipe, and the FK-enforced original failure mode (via PRAGMA foreign_keys=ON to mirror PostgreSQL behavior on SQLite). For an operator-stopped node this flooded the logs with the same WARN+INFO pair every check interval. Skip the staleness branch when the node is already StatusOffline / StatusUnhealthy — the state is already what we'd write, so neither the log lines nor the DB update carry information. CUDA init on Orin/Thor first boot measures in seconds, not milliseconds. - On deadline-exceeded, stop the half-started process, recycle the port, and return an error with the backend's stderr tail. The frontend now gets a real failure with diagnostic context instead of a misleading ECONNREFUSED on a downstream dial. Process death during the wait window keeps its existing fast-fail path. Auto-upgrade always failed with "backend not found". UpgradeChecker correctly routed CheckUpgrades through the active BackendManager (so the frontend aggregates worker state), but the auto-upgrade branch right below called gallery.UpgradeBackend directly with the frontend's SystemState. In distributed mode the frontend has no backends installed locally, so ListSystemBackends returned empty and Get(name) failed for every reported upgrade. Auto-upgrade now also goes through BackendManager.UpgradeBackend, which fans out to workers via NATS. 2. Embedding-load failure on a remote node crashed the orchestrator. When RAG init lazily called NewPersistentPostgresCollection and the remote embedding worker was unreachable, LocalRecall called os.Exit(1) inside the constructor, killing the orchestrator pod. LocalRecall now returns errors instead, LocalAGI surfaces them as a nil collection, and the existing RAGProviderFromState path returns (nil, nil, false) — the same code path the agent pool already takes when no RAG is configured. The orchestrator stays up; chat requests degrade to "no RAG available" until the embedding worker recovers. fix(agents): handle embedding model dim changes on collection upload (#9365)
Bumps LocalAGI to pick up the LocalRecall postgres backend fix that resizes the pgvector column when the configured embedding model returns vectors of a different dimensionality than the existing collection. Switching the agent pool's embedding model now triggers a transparent re-embed at startup instead of failing every subsequent upload with 'expected N dimensions, not M' (SQLSTATE 22000). Also surfaces a 409 with an actionable message in UploadToCollectionEndpoint as a safety net for the rare cases the upstream migration path doesn't cover (e.g. a model swapped at runtime), instead of the previous opaque 500. |
