Nick Khyl 1ec348784b ipn/ipnlocal,net/dns/resolver: prevent bare name resolution when MagicDNS is disabled
nodeBackend.nodeByName should always contain both FQDNs and short names,
as it is used in different contexts, including UserDial DNS resolution, which should
be able to resolve unqualified DNS names regardless of the MagicDNS state.

However, net/dns/resolver.Resolver and, by extension, MagicDNSHosts
implementations should only resolve fully qualified domain names,
skipping short names when MagicDNS is disabled for the tailnet.

This fixes it in (*nodeBackend).nodeByFQDNLocked, which is only used
in the MagicDNS paths, and updates the tests.

Brendan Creane e1e5325c22 net/dns/resolver: reach netstack-only upstreams over UDP (#20786)
sendTCP dials through tsdial.Dialer and so honors UseNetstackForIP, but
sendUDP opened a host-stack socket via packetListener and never consulted
the dialer. In userspace networking mode (tsnet, or tailscaled
--tun=userspace-networking) there is no tun device, so a split-DNS query
to a tailnet resolver blackholed for the full udpRaceTimeout before the
TCP fallback answered it.

Add dialUDP, which picks between the netstack dialer and the existing
packetListener the same way tsdial.Dialer.dialOneUser does, and adapt the
connected netstack conn to nettype.PacketConn. sendUDP is otherwise
unchanged, so txid checks, SERVFAIL/REFUSED handling, TC flagging and EDNS
clamping are identical on both paths.

Unskips the UDP subtest of TestForwarderNetstackUpstream, which now
answers in ~300µs rather than 2s, and adds unit tests for the dispatch and
for truncation over the netstack path. TestSplitDNSToTailnetResolverUDP
covers the whole path end to end over real gVisor: two tsnet nodes with no
tun, one resolving a split-DNS name whose upstream is the other.

Brendan Creane 8bebdca90c net/dns/resolver: add test for upstream resolvers reached via netstack (#20779)
sendTCP dials through tsdial.Dialer and so honors UseNetstackForIP, but
sendUDP always uses a host-stack socket. In userspace networking mode
there is no route to the tailnet, so a split-DNS query to a tailnet
resolver only succeeds after falling back to TCP. The two subtests
differ only in transport, isolating that gap; the UDP one is skipped
pending a fix.

Simon Law 00699abdfb tailcfg,tailcfg/{nodecap,selfcap}: split capability constants to their own packages (#20639)
Package tailcfg defines the types and constants used by the Tailscale
protocol, but since everything is all in one package, it’s difficult
to sift through the docs: https://pkg.go.dev/tailscale.com/tailcfg

We define and enumerate capabilities as string constants for
tailcfg.NodeCapability and tailcfg.PeerCapability. This PR extracts
them into their own packages:

- tailcfg.CapabilityFileSharing becomes nodecap.FileSharing
- tailcfg.NodeAttrOnlyTCP443 becomes nodecap.OnlyTCP443
- tailcfg.PeerCapabilityTaildrive becomes peercap.Taildrive

We originally intended for CapabilityFoo to grant an entitlement or
permission for Foo, and for NodeAttrBar to configure Bar in the
nodeAttrs section of the policy file. However, there was no technical
enforcement of this convention, so new capabilities have used the
NodeAttr prefix regardless of meaning. Therefore, this PR unifies
tailcfg.CapabilityFoo and tailcfg.NodeAttrBar into a single package as
nodecap.Foo and nodecap.Bar.

Ran `go fix -inline ./...` and committed the changes that replaced
uses of the tailcfg aliases with the authoritative ones.

Brad Fitzpatrick 0bbe6394de net/dns/resolver: bound negative caching with SOA records, lower positive TTL
The MagicDNS resolver answered NXDOMAIN and no-data queries with no
SOA record in the authority section. RFC 2308 says such responses
should not be cached, but some resolvers cache them anyway on their
own schedule: macOS's mDNSResponder seems to cache them for a really
long time, so a name queried shortly before a node was renamed to it
didn't start resolving until something flushed the cache, such as
toggling Tailscale off and on.

Attach the zone's SOA record to negative responses for domains we're
authoritative for, advertising a 10 second negative-caching TTL. The
SOA serial is the response time in unix seconds; nothing consumes it
(no secondaries, no zone transfers), but it's at least monotonic.

Also lower the TTL of positive answers from 600 seconds to 5. The
source of truth is local and in-memory, so re-queries are nearly
free, while anything cached downstream delays clients noticing node
renames for the full TTL.

Brendan Creane d2af6a4d39 net/dns/publicdns: don't upgrade Control D port-53-only addresses to DoH (#20463)
DoHEndpointFromIP mapped the entire 2606:1a40::/48 range to a
dns.controld.com/<id> DoH URL, but the ID-encoded addresses in that range
are legacy plaintext-DNS endpoints that refuse :443. They now fall through
as ordinary port-53 resolvers; the free anycast freedns.controld.com/pN
addresses still upgrade via exact match.

Brad Fitzpatrick 7e609b2581 ipn/ipnlocal,net/dns/resolver: serve MagicDNS names from live indexes
Every netmap change, including an incremental delta of a single peer,
rebuilt the full MagicDNS state twice: dnsConfigForNetmap walked all
peers to build the dns.Config.Hosts map, and resolver.SetConfig then
walked that map again to build its reverse (PTR) index. On a tailnet
with 10k peers that is a lot of garbage per delta.

Instead, add a resolver.MagicDNSHosts hook, installed once by
LocalBackend, that the quad-100 resolver consults on demand at query
time. It is backed by nodeBackend's nodeByName, nodeByAddr, and peers
indexes, which are already maintained incrementally as netmap deltas
arrive. The subdomain-resolve capability check also moves to the hook
(checking the node's CapMap at query time), so dns.Config's
SubdomainHosts is no longer populated.

dns.Config.Hosts remains for control's DNS.ExtraRecords, which are
few and which feed the split-DNS decisions in dns.Manager's
compileConfig, and on Windows it still carries every node's records
because the hosts-file fallback path (compileHostEntries) needs the
complete enumerable set. Those compileConfig decisions also consulted
the per-node Hosts entries (hasHostsWithoutSplitDNSRoutes), so a new
Config.MagicDNSHostsUnrouted bit preserves that signal now that node
records are not listed: with MagicDNS names present but MagicDNS
domain routing off, quad-100 stays in the OS resolver path.

One small behavior change: reverse (PTR) lookups now also answer for
node addresses whose forward records are filtered out by the
IPv6-suppression rule (issue #1152), since nodeByAddr indexes all node
addresses. Previously such addresses were absent from the pushed
Hosts map and thus from the reverse index.

Brendan Creane 8eb18d902e net/dns/publicdns: use Control D anycast IPs for premium DoH (#20434)
For dns.controld.com premium resolvers we synthesized per-resolver IPv6
addresses by encoding the resolver ID into the 2606:1a40::/48 range, but
those are legacy plaintext-DNS (port 53) endpoints that refuse TCP :443.
DoH now dials Control D's shared anycast IPs (the resolver ID stays in the
URL path), fixing SERVFAIL on IPv6-only/NAT64 networks where the v4
anycast fallback isn't reachable.

Brendan Creane b26dadf1b5 net/dns/resolver: skip DNS health warning when doing split DNS (#19959)
When MagicDNS is enabled but no global upstream resolvers are configured,
the forwarder only handles specific suffixes and defers other names to the
system resolver. A query it has no resolver for is expected in that case, so
don't raise the dns-forward-failing warning unless a default "." route makes
Tailscale the default resolver.

Brad Fitzpatrick 52400dc6f4 ipn/ipnlocal: add back a watchdog after earlier removal from engine
Commit 2b338dd6a8 removed watchdogEngine because it was weird
(so many methods) and increasingly unnecessary after we'd cleaned up
and simplified so much of the locking.

This adds back a watchdog, but an easier to maintain one that's more
idiomatic.

Fran Bull bdf3419e7d net/dns: add custom scheme resolvers
If another part of the client code registers a custom scheme with the
forwarder, the forwarder will check resolver addresses to see if they
match the scheme. If they do, the corresponding custom scheme handler
will be called to find the actual address for the resolver at this
moment. If the handler returns the empty string then that resolver will
be ignored.

This is useful if you want to dynamically determine where to send
certain DNS requests. It is being added to support new app connector
(conn25) work that would like to make sure it sends DNS requests to the
current connector peer in a high availability configuration.

Brad Fitzpatrick 5ef3713c9f cmd/vet: add subtestnames analyzer; fix all existing violations
Add a new vet analyzer that checks t.Run subtest names don't contain
characters requiring quoting when re-running via "go test -run". This
enforces the style guide rule: don't use spaces or punctuation in
subtest names.

The analyzer flags:
- Direct t.Run calls with string literal names containing spaces,
  regex metacharacters, quotes, or other problematic characters
- Table-driven t.Run(tt.name, ...) calls where tt ranges over a
  slice/map literal with bad name field values

Also fix all 978 existing violations across 81 test files, replacing
spaces with hyphens and shortening long sentence-like names to concise
hyphenated forms.

Brendan Creane 0b4c0f2080 net/dns/resolver: treat DNS REFUSED responses as soft errors in forwarder race (#19053)
When racing multiple upstream DNS resolvers, a REFUSED (RCode 5) response
from a broken or misconfigured resolver could win the race and be returned
to the client before healthier resolvers had a chance to respond with a
valid answer. This caused complete DNS failure in cases where, e.g., a
broken upstream resolver returned REFUSED quickly while a working resolver
(such as 1.1.1.1) was still responding.

Previously, only SERVFAIL (RCode 2) was treated as a soft error. REFUSED
responses were returned as successful bytes and could win the race
immediately. This change also treats REFUSED as a soft error in the UDP
and TCP forwarding paths, so the race continues until a better answer
arrives. If all resolvers refuse, the first REFUSED response is returned
to the client.

Additionally, SERVFAIL responses from upstream resolvers are now returned
verbatim to the client rather than replaced with a locally synthesized
packet. Synthesized SERVFAIL responses were authoritative and guaranteed
to include a question section echoing the original query; upstream
responses carry no such guarantees but may include extended error
information (e.g. RFC 8914 extended DNS errors) that would otherwise
be lost.

Jonathan Nobels 086968c15b net/dns, ipn/local: skip health warnings in dns forwarder when accept-dns is false (#18572)
fixes tailscale/tailscale#18436

Queries can still make their way to the forwarder when accept-dns is disabled.
Since we have not configured the forwarder if --accept-dns is false, this errors out
(correctly) but it also generates a persistent health warning.   This forwards the
Pref setting all the way through the stack to the forwarder so that we can be more
judicious about when we decide that the forward path is unintentionally missing, vs
simply not configured.

Testing:
tailscale set --accept-dns=false. (or from the GUI)
dig @100.100.100.100 example.com
tailscale status

No dns related health warnings should be surfaced.

Brendan Creane 8cac8b117b net/dns/resolver: set TC flag when UDP responses exceed size limits (#18157)
The forwarder was not setting the Truncated (TC) flag when UDP DNS
responses exceeded either the EDNS buffer size (if present) or the
RFC 1035 default 512-byte limit. This affected DoH, TCP fallback,
and UDP response paths.

The fix ensures checkResponseSizeAndSetTC is called in all code paths
that return UDP responses, enforcing both EDNS and default UDP size
limits.

Added comprehensive unit tests and consolidated duplicate test helpers.

Fernando Serboncini f48cd46662 net/dns,ipn/ipnlocal: add nodecap to resolve subdomains (#18258)
This adds a new node capability 'dns-subdomain-resolve' that signals
that all of hosts' subdomains should resolve to the same IP address.
It allows wildcard matching on any node marked with this capability.

This change also includes an util/dnsname utility function that lets
us access the parent of a full qualified domain name. MagicDNS takes
this function and recursively searchs for a matching real node name.

One important thing to observe is that, in this context, a subdomain
can have multiple sub labels. This means that for a given node named
machine, both my.machine and be.my.machine will be a positive match.

Will Norris 3ec5be3f51 all: remove AUTHORS file and references to it
This file was never truly necessary and has never actually been used in
the history of Tailscale's open source releases.

A Brief History of AUTHORS files
---

The AUTHORS file was a pattern developed at Google, originally for
Chromium, then adopted by Go and a bunch of other projects. The problem
was that Chromium originally had a copyright line only recognizing
Google as the copyright holder. Because Google (and most open source
projects) do not require copyright assignemnt for contributions, each
contributor maintains their copyright. Some large corporate contributors
then tried to add their own name to the copyright line in the LICENSE
file or in file headers. This quickly becomes unwieldy, and puts a
tremendous burden on anyone building on top of Chromium, since the
license requires that they keep all copyright lines intact.

The compromise was to create an AUTHORS file that would list all of the
copyright holders. The LICENSE file and source file headers would then
include that list by reference, listing the copyright holder as "The
Chromium Authors".

This also become cumbersome to simply keep the file up to date with a
high rate of new contributors. Plus it's not always obvious who the
copyright holder is. Sometimes it is the individual making the
contribution, but many times it may be their employer. There is no way
for the proejct maintainer to know.

Eventually, Google changed their policy to no longer recommend trying to
keep the AUTHORS file up to date proactively, and instead to only add to
it when requested: https://opensource.google/docs/releasing/authors.
They are also clear that:

> Adding contributors to the AUTHORS file is entirely within the
> project's discretion and has no implications for copyright ownership.

It was primarily added to appease a small number of large contributors
that insisted that they be recognized as copyright holders (which was
entirely their right to do). But it's not truly necessary, and not even
the most accurate way of identifying contributors and/or copyright
holders.

In practice, we've never added anyone to our AUTHORS file. It only lists
Tailscale, so it's not really serving any purpose. It also causes
confusion because Tailscalars put the "Tailscale Inc & AUTHORS" header
in other open source repos which don't actually have an AUTHORS file, so
it's ambiguous what that means.

Instead, we just acknowledge that the contributors to Tailscale (whoever
they are) are copyright holders for their individual contributions. We
also have the benefit of using the DCO (developercertificate.org) which
provides some additional certification of their right to make the
contribution.

The source file changes were purely mechanical with:

    git ls-files | xargs sed -i -e 's/\(Tailscale Inc &\) AUTHORS/\1 contributors/g'

Brad Fitzpatrick bcd79b161a feature/featuretags: add option to turn off DNS
Saves 328 KB (2.5%) off the minimal binary.

For IoT devices that don't need MagicDNS (e.g. they don't make
outbound connections), this provides a knob to disable all the DNS
functionality.

Rather than a massive refactor today, this uses constant false values
as a deadcode sledgehammer, guided by shotizam to find the largest DNS
functions which survived deadcode.

A future refactor could make it so that the net/dns/resolver and
publicdns packages don't even show up in the import graph (along with
their imports) but really it's already pretty good looking with just
these consts, so it's not at the top of my list to refactor it more
soon.

Also do the same in a few places with the ACME (cert) functionality,
as I saw those while searching for DNS stuff.

Claus Lensbøl 2015ce4081 health,ipn/ipnlocal: introduce eventbus in heath.Tracker (#17085)
The Tracker was using direct callbacks to ipnlocal. This PR moves those
to be triggered via the eventbus.

Additionally, the eventbus is now closed on exit from tailscaled
explicitly, and health is now a SubSystem in tsd.

Jonathan Nobels 5e54819cee net/dns: cache dns.Config for reuse when compileConfig fails (#16059)
fixes tailscale/corp#25612

We now keep track of any dns configurations which we could not
compile. This gives RecompileDNSConfig a configuration to
attempt to recompile and apply when the OS pokes us to indicate
that the interface dns servers have changed/updated.   The manager config
will remain unset until we have the required information to compile
it correctly which should eliminate the problematic SERVFAIL
responses (especially on macOS 15).

This also removes the missingUpstreamRecovery func in the forwarder
which is no longer required now that we have proper error handling
and recovery manager and the client.

Nick Khyl a9be049c19 ipn/ipnlocal,net/dns/resolver: use the user dialer and routes for DNS forwarding by default, except on iOS and Android
In this PR, we make the "user-dial-routes" behavior default on all platforms except for iOS and Android.
It can be disabled by setting the TS_DNS_FORWARD_USE_ROUTES envknob to 0 or false.

Brad Fitzpatrick fb96137d79 net/{netx,memnet},all: add netx.DialFunc, move memnet Network impl
This adds netx.DialFunc, unifying a type we have a bazillion other
places, giving it now a nice short name that's clickable in
editors, etc.

That highlighted that my earlier move (03b47a55c7) of stuff from
nettest into netx moved too much: it also dragged along the memnet
impl, meaning all users of netx.DialFunc who just wanted netx for the
type definition were instead also pulling in all of memnet.

So move the memnet implementation netx.Network into memnet, a package
we already had.

Then use netx.DialFunc in a bunch of places. I'm sure I missed some.
And plenty remain in other repos, to be updated later.

Nick Khyl f07ff47922 net/dns/resolver: add tests for using a forwarder with multiple upstream resolvers
If multiple upstream DNS servers are available, quad-100 sends requests to all of them
and forwards the first successful response, if any. If no successful responses are received,
it propagates the first failure from any of them.

This PR adds some test coverage for these scenarios.

Nick Hill c2144c44a3 net/dns/resolver: update (*forwarder).forwardWithDestChan to always return an error unless it sends a response to responseChan
We currently have two executions paths where (*forwarder).forwardWithDestChan
returns nil, rather than an error, without sending a DNS response to responseChan.

These paths are accompanied by a comment that reads:
// Returning an error will cause an internal retry, there is
// nothing we can do if parsing failed. Just drop the packet.
But it is not (or no longer longer) accurate: returning an error from forwardWithDestChan
does not currently cause a retry.

Moreover, although these paths are currently unreachable due to implementation details,
if (*forwarder).forwardWithDestChan were to return nil without sending a response to
responseChan, it would cause a deadlock at one call site and a panic at another.

Therefore, we update (*forwarder).forwardWithDestChan to return errors in those two paths
and remove comments that were no longer accurate and misleading.

Nick Hill 17335d2104 net/dns/resolver: forward SERVFAIL responses over PeerDNS
As per the docstring, (*forwarder).forwardWithDestChan should either send to responseChan
and returns nil, or returns a non-nil error (without sending to the channel).
However, this does not hold when all upstream DNS servers replied with an error.

We've been handling this special error path in (*Resolver).Query but not in (*Resolver).HandlePeerDNSQuery.
As a result, SERVFAIL responses from upstream servers were being converted into HTTP 503 responses,
instead of being properly forwarded as SERVFAIL within a successful HTTP response, as per RFC 8484, section 4.2.1:
A successful HTTP response with a 2xx status code (see Section 6.3 of [RFC7231]) is used for any valid DNS response,
regardless of the DNS response code. For example, a successful 2xx HTTP status code is used even with a DNS message
whose DNS response code indicates failure, such as SERVFAIL or NXDOMAIN.

In this PR we fix (*forwarder).forwardWithDestChan to no longer return an error when it sends a response to responseChan,
and remove the special handling in (*Resolver).Query, as it is no longer necessary.

Andrea Gottardo 6de6ab015f net/dns: tweak DoH timeout, limit MaxConnsPerHost, require TLS 1.3 (#13564)

This is the result of some observations we made today with @raggi. The DNS over HTTPS client currently doesn't cap the number of connections it uses, either in-use or idle. A burst of DNS queries will open multiple connections. Idle connections remain open for 30 seconds (this interval is defined in the dohTransportTimeout constant). For DoH providers like NextDNS which send keep-alives, this means the cellular modem will remain up more than expected to send ACKs if any keep-alives are received while a connection remains idle during those 30 seconds. We can set the IdleConnTimeout to 10 seconds to ensure an idle connection is terminated if no other DNS queries come in after 10 seconds. Additionally, we can cap the number of connections to 1. This ensures that at all times there is only one open DoH connection, either active or idle. If idle, it will be terminated within 10 seconds from the last query.

We also observed all the DoH providers we support are capable of TLS 1.3. We can force this TLS version to reduce the number of packets sent/received each time a TLS connection is established.

James Tucker af5a845a87 net/dns/resolver: fix dns-sd NXDOMAIN responses from quad-100
mdnsResponder at least as of macOS Sequoia does not find NXDOMAIN
responses to these dns-sd PTR queries acceptable unless they include the
question section in the response. This was found debugging #13511, once
we turned on additional diagnostic reporting from mdnsResponder we
witnessed:

If the response includes a question section, the resposnes are
acceptable, e.g.:

```

This may be contributing to an issue under diagnosis in #13511 wherein
some combination of conditions results in mdnsResponder no longer
answering DNS queries correctly to applications on the system for
extended periods of time (multiple minutes), while dig against quad-100
provides correct responses for those same domains. If additional debug
logging is enabled in mdnsResponder we see it reporting:

```
Penalizing server 100.100.100.100 for 60 seconds
```

It is also possible that the reason that macOS & iOS never "stopped
spamming" these queries is that they have never been replied to with
acceptable responses. It is not clear if this special case handling of
dns-sd PTR queries was ever beneficial, and given this evidence may have
always been harmful. If we subsequently observe that the queries settle
down now that they have acceptable responses, we should remove these
special cases - making upstream queries very occasionally isn't a lot of
battery, so we should be better off having to maintain less special
cases and avoid bugs of this class.

Andrea Gottardo 5cbbb48c2e health/dns: reduce severity of DNS unavailable warning (#13152)
`DNS unavailable` was marked as a high severity warning. On Android (and other platforms), these trigger a system notification. Here we reduce the severity level to medium. A medium severity warning will still display the warning icon on platforms with a tray icon because of the `ImpactsConnectivity=true` flag being set here, but it won't show a notification anymore. If people enter an area with bad cellular reception, they're bound to receive so many of these notifications and we need to reduce notification fatigue.

and includes the request type, domain name length, and the first 3 bytes of the domain's SHA-256 hash in the output.

"internet is broken'" to the end user.  This  plumbs the health tracker
into the dns manager and forwarder and adds a health warning
with a 5 second delay that is raised on failures in the forwarder and
